Tucked away in the heart of Amsterdam’s inner city lies a hidden gem:
Our Lord in the Attic Museum. A uniquely preserved seventeenth-century house, including an entire church in its attic.
Challenge
The museum wanted to offer an entertaining and educational experience for the little ones. Getting their attention, informing them and keeping them focused would require a different museum guiding approach compared to adults.
During a restoration, the museum was looking for a new way to inform their visitors after they started working with a booklet to guide the visitors. They decided to use an audio guide for this. After the finalization of the restoration and the completion of new entrance building in 2015, the authentic experience of the museum was the central point of focus. Visitors should feel as if the owners of the house just popped out for groceries. That’s why the museum didn’t want to use signs with information.

Solution
Our Lord in the Attic decided to go with an audio tour that would let visitors experience the exhibit fully, without any distraction. Not only did experience play a big role in the decision-making process for the audio guide; safety did as well. Due to the many steps in the museum, an audio-only tour was the most responsible way to let people enjoy the museum.
They started out with just one tour, but noticed that the content was too difficult for children. They decided to create two different versions of their tour, one for adults and a separate one for kids.

Results
Between 90% and 95% of the visitors (120.000 adults, 2000 kids) use the audio guide, and the feedback on this is overwhelmingly positive. Since the audio tour was implemented, many compliments have been made.
The duration of visits are also longer when people use the Podcatcher. If visitors use the audio guide they stay for approximately 50 minutes, while people without the device can be out the door in roughly 20 minutes. Showcasing that the audio guide contributes to more and longer attention to the objects and stories in the museum.

"One of our favorite stops in Amsterdam - this museum is a treasure. The house and church tour are very well done via the audio guide, and the church itself is a gem."
An audio tour for kids & adults
Easy content management for all different audio tours (kids and adults).
For the children, the information in the audio tour is slimmed down and made more entertaining. The museum also makes a connection with the religious holidays, like Christmas or the Dutch Sinterklaas, in the tour content as well as in the objects on display. This kids’ tour provides more theme-focused information.

Interactive Quiz in the audio tour
The technology of the audiotour Podcatcher allows the integration of a quiz into the tour.
The quiz makes sure the children focus more on what they’re seeing. By the end of the tour, the kids' 'score' is shared with them via the audio guide, the Podcatcher, and they receive a diploma on their way out.

Improvement on Visitor’s Experience
Visitors’ feedback enhance the positive effects on their experience by providing a free audio guide:
“I expected a small attic church but this is much more than that. A large space with lots of information on the free audio guide really brought it to life to me. We went on a whim and I am really glad we did!” – Visitor from the United Kingdom.
